How does pay-per-click work,for the host as well as the surfer?Do they really pay?

When you sign up for an affiliate program you recieve a special code that tells the site when your link has been clicked, the site then deposits money in your account. It doesnt help the surfer at all. It generates income for the person who has the site. Usually the affiliate requires that the surfer buys something from their site.
